La unidad Ralco está ubicada en la Región del Biobío, en la comuna de Alto Biobío, provincia de Biobío. La unidad destaca por la protección de las especies de fauna como el puma, el zorro culpeo, la bandurria y el cóndor. En cuanto a flora está la araucaria o pewén, la lenga, el ñirre, el roble, el liuto amarillo, entre otras. En la reserva es posible apreciar la cultura pehuenche, a través de los rituales, actividades ganaderas y de recolección de madera y piñones que realizan las comunidades de la etnia originaria.

En esta Reserva se presentan las siguientes especies de vegetación: lenga (Nothofagus pumilio), chichón (Azara alpina), colihue (Chusquea coleu), maitén chico (Maytenus disticha), calafate (Berberis buxifolia), michay (Berberis pearcei), pilluden (Viola maculata), araucaria (Araucaria araucana), coigüe (Nothofagus dombeyi), sauco del diablo (Pseudopanax laetevirens), taique (Desfontainia spinosa), canelillo (Drymis winteri var. Andina), notro (Embotrium coccineum), entre otros. En la fauna de la Reserva encontramos especies de mamíferos como la güiña (Oncefelis guigna), el quique (Galictis cuja), la vizcacha (Lagidium vicacia) el puma (Puma concolor), el pudú (Pudu pudu) y el degú de Bridges (Octodon bridgesi). En la avifauna, las especies representativas son la bandurria (Theristicus melanopis), el piuquén (Chloephaga melanoptera), el cóndor (Vultur gryphus), el choroy (Enicognathus leptorhynchus) y el carpintero negro (Campephilus magellanicus).

Pino araucaria, suelo, cauces hídricos (Decreto de creación, 1987). Dentro de las formaciones vegetacionales, se singularizan bosque caducifolio Alto-Andino con Araucaria y el bosque caducifolio Andino del Bio-Bio caracterizado por las asociaciones araucaria -lenga, araucaria-coihue y roble-raulí; la fauna silvestre relevante en base a sus problemas de conservación son: güiña, clasificado en Peligro de Extinción; puma, quique, bandurria, cóndor, cachaña, carpintero negro, choroy y piuquén, clasificados como Vulnerable; y zorro culpeo como Inadecuadamente Conocida a nivel nacional. Proteger el pino Araucaria; Conservación y protección del suelo, la protección de cauces hídricos; Recuperar áreas degradadas; Aprovechar racionalmente recursos naturales en algunos sectores, por parte de comunidades indígenas y la protección de un importante patrimonio genético (Plan de manejo, 1987). Conservar una muestra representativa de las formaciones vegetales; Proteger además, el valor genético de la araucaria; Preservar la fauna silvestre con problemas de conservación presentes en la Unidad; Conservar y proteger los suelos; Proteger los recursos hídricos.
