La Reserva Nacional "Kawésqar", está conformada por el espacio marítimo que formaba parte del perímetro de la Ex Reserva Forestal "Alacalufes", recategorizado. Lo anterior permite dar cumplimiento a las demandas fundamentales del pueblo Kawésqar, expresadas en el proceso de cultura indígena, esto es, la protección de sus aguas, la compatibilidad de ejercer actividades productivas en dicho espacio marítimo, y, el reconocimiento al pueblo Kawésqar, a través del cambio de nombre de las nuevas áreas protegidas.
